Financial Planners (distinct from Advisors in this context, typically focused on holistic life planning rather than investment-led advice) combine technical financial knowledge with deep listening and goal-setting skills. Their clients are often making the most important financial decisions of their lives. Hire for both technical competence and the interpersonal maturity to guide clients through complex, emotionally charged conversations.
Ask how they approach a first meeting with a new client and what their discovery process looks like. Planners who lead with products rather than goals are a compliance risk and a client satisfaction problem. Look for evidence of genuine goals-based planning methodology.
Strong financial planners are comfortable across superannuation, insurance, budgeting, debt management, estate planning co-ordination, and investment strategy. Ask for examples across at least three of these domains to assess genuine breadth versus narrow specialisation.
Financial planning generates ongoing revenue through annual reviews and continuous advice. Ask how they've structured and delivered ongoing service, what their retention rate is, and how they've managed clients who question the ongoing fee value.
Financial planning jargon alienates clients. Ask them to explain a complex concept — compound growth, insurance underwriting, or the tax treatment of superannuation contributions — in language suitable for a client with no financial background. This is a live test worth running in the interview.
Discovery process leads with products rather than goals
Advice breadth is narrow — primarily investment or insurance with no holistic capability
Client retention is low — high attrition after the initial plan is delivered
Ongoing service model is reactive rather than structured
Cannot explain a complex concept in plain language without jargon
SOA preparation is described as paraplanner-dependent with minimal planner input
Financial planning is ultimately about people, not numbers. Planners who've had prior careers in teaching, social work, nursing, or other human-centred professions often develop exceptional client rapport and goal-discovery skills that purely finance-trained planners spend years trying to build. When reviewing candidates with non-linear career paths into financial planning, weight their interpersonal maturity and listening skills heavily — the technical knowledge is more teachable than the human skills.
"Walk me through your first meeting with a new client. What do you try to understand before you discuss any strategy?"
Discovery quality determines whether advice is genuinely goals-based or product-driven.
"Explain compound interest and its role in long-term wealth building as if I'm a client who has never invested before."
Plain language communication is a live test — this directly assesses client communication quality.
"Tell me about a client relationship where you've significantly changed their financial trajectory. What was the situation and what did you do?"
Genuine client impact stories reveal both technical capability and the relationship depth of their practice.
"How do you handle a client who questions the value of their ongoing annual review fee?"
Ongoing value articulation is a recurring challenge — this tests commercial confidence and client relationship skills.
Every model has trade-offs. Here's how they compare so you can choose the right fit for your team.
General options
Hire directly in your city. Full cultural alignment and in-office presence, but the talent pool is limited and salaries are high.
Engage on a task or sprint basis. Fast to start, but loyalty is low and availability is never guaranteed long-term.
Hand off a scoped project to an agency. Good for defined deliverables, but you pay a premium and own very little of the relationship.

The flexibility and cultural fit made a huge difference. It wasn't just about filling seats - it was about finding the right people.

Have a chat with Teamified. You will get a sense that it's much more of a relationship situation where they're really wanting to understand your business, as opposed to a more transactional experience, which is what we found talking with some other providers. The good thing is, there's a team behind you if you pick the right partner to help.

I encourage all founders to treat this no different than hiring a local resource. The best thing about Teamified? They find great talent, vet them, and give you the flexibility to be as involved as you want in the hiring process.

My favourite part would be the opportunity for growth. I've seen it in the short time that I've been here, and I'm looking forward to more.
