Auditors operate in a field where professional scepticism is a virtue, not an attitude problem. The best ones find things organisations don't want found — and communicate those findings in ways that produce action rather than defensiveness. Hiring a good auditor means hiring someone who is technically rigorous, independently minded, and diplomatically direct.
Ask which auditing standards they work under (GAAS, ISA, IIA, or sector-specific). A candidate who can't articulate the standards framework relevant to their specialisation is working by feel, not method.
Ask for a real example of a significant finding they made — not a generic description but a specific issue, how they identified it, how they quantified the impact, and how they communicated it. The finding quality and the communication quality are equally important.
Auditors are sometimes pressured to soften findings or adjust conclusions. Ask directly for an example of pushback they received on a finding and how they handled it.
Modern auditing increasingly relies on data analytics for sampling and anomaly detection. Ask about their experience with ACL, IDEA, or SQL-based data extraction, and how they've used data analytics in their audit process.
Cannot name the auditing standards framework they work under
Findings are vague and non-quantified
Has softened or withdrawn findings under management pressure
No data analytics experience — relies entirely on manual sampling
Working paper documentation is described as 'basic' or 'as needed'
Cannot give a specific example of a significant finding they personally made
Big Four auditors work on large, complex engagements but often in narrow, highly supervised roles. Mid-tier firm candidates frequently carry broader responsibility earlier in their careers — they lead fieldwork, make judgement calls, and present findings directly to audit committees. For internal audit or smaller external audit contexts, mid-tier experience often produces more independent, rounded candidates.
"Tell me about the most significant finding you've made in your audit career. How did you find it, and what was the outcome?"
Finding quality and attribution reveal actual audit depth — not just process compliance.
"Describe a time you received pushback on a finding from management. What did you do?"
Independence under pressure is the defining professional characteristic of a strong auditor.
"How have you used data analytics in your audit process? Give a specific example."
Data-driven auditing is increasingly expected — this tests modern methodology adoption.
"How do you manage an audit where the auditee is uncooperative or slow to provide evidence?"
Uncooperative environments are common — this tests persistence and escalation judgement.
Every model has trade-offs. Here's how they compare so you can choose the right fit for your team.
General options
Hire directly in your city. Full cultural alignment and in-office presence, but the talent pool is limited and salaries are high.
Engage on a task or sprint basis. Fast to start, but loyalty is low and availability is never guaranteed long-term.
Hand off a scoped project to an agency. Good for defined deliverables, but you pay a premium and own very little of the relationship.

Have a chat with Teamified. You will get a sense that it's much more of a relationship situation where they're really wanting to understand your business, as opposed to a more transactional experience, which is what we found talking with some other providers. The good thing is, there's a team behind you if you pick the right partner to help.

I encourage all founders to treat this no different than hiring a local resource. The best thing about Teamified? They find great talent, vet them, and give you the flexibility to be as involved as you want in the hiring process.

My favourite part would be the opportunity for growth. I've seen it in the short time that I've been here, and I'm looking forward to more.
