Financial Analysts are the analytical engine behind commercial decisions — building models that inform investment, pricing, budgeting, and strategic choices. The quality of their models and the clarity of their insights determine whether decision-makers act with confidence or uncertainty. Hire for structural thinking and communication skill, not just Excel proficiency.
Ask for a financial model they've built — ideally with a walkthrough. Key things to probe: is it structured for auditability (inputs separated from calculations, clearly labelled), does it handle scenario analysis cleanly, and are assumptions documented? Models that can't be reviewed by someone else are a liability.
Ask how their forecasts have compared to actuals over time and what they've done when variance was significant. Analysts who own their assumptions and update them based on actuals develop forecasting judgement; those who treat forecasting as a one-time exercise do not.
Ask for an example of presenting a complex financial analysis to a non-finance executive. How did they translate the model output into a decision-relevant narrative? Analysts who can only communicate to other finance people create information silos.
Financial analysis methodology varies by context — M&A, FP&A, equity research, project finance, and commercial finance require different frameworks. Confirm their experience aligns with your primary use case before investing in technical assessment.
Models are not structured for auditability — hardcoded numbers, unlabelled rows
Forecast variances are not tracked or learned from
Analysis outputs are not communicable to non-finance audiences
Cannot explain the assumptions behind a model they've built
SQL proficiency absent — all data extraction is manual
Scenario analysis described as a feature they've never implemented
Ex-IB analysts bring exceptional modelling rigour and work ethic, but often arrive with a transaction-focused mindset that doesn't immediately translate to the ongoing operational rhythm of FP&A or commercial finance. They tend to over-engineer models and under-invest in stakeholder communication initially. With clear scope-setting and a structured first 90 days, they typically become high performers — the raw analytical foundation is strong.
"Walk me through the most complex financial model you've built. How was it structured, and how did you ensure it was auditable?"
Model structure and auditability reveal professional standards — not just analytical capability.
"Tell me about a significant forecast variance you experienced. What caused it, and what did you change?"
Learning from variance is the mechanism that improves forecasting quality over time.
"How would you build a three-statement model for a subscription software business from scratch? Walk me through your approach."
Applied modelling thinking tests whether they understand the business logic, not just the mechanics.
"Describe a time you presented a financial analysis that changed a major business decision. What was the analysis and how did you communicate it?"
Decision impact is the ultimate measure of financial analyst value.
Every model has trade-offs. Here's how they compare so you can choose the right fit for your team.
General options
Hire directly in your city. Full cultural alignment and in-office presence, but the talent pool is limited and salaries are high.
Engage on a task or sprint basis. Fast to start, but loyalty is low and availability is never guaranteed long-term.
Hand off a scoped project to an agency. Good for defined deliverables, but you pay a premium and own very little of the relationship.

The flexibility and cultural fit made a huge difference. It wasn't just about filling seats - it was about finding the right people.

Have a chat with Teamified. You will get a sense that it's much more of a relationship situation where they're really wanting to understand your business, as opposed to a more transactional experience, which is what we found talking with some other providers. The good thing is, there's a team behind you if you pick the right partner to help.

I encourage all founders to treat this no different than hiring a local resource. The best thing about Teamified? They find great talent, vet them, and give you the flexibility to be as involved as you want in the hiring process.

My favourite part would be the opportunity for growth. I've seen it in the short time that I've been here, and I'm looking forward to more.
