Data Analysts translate numbers into decisions. The best ones don't just answer the question asked — they understand the business problem well enough to know when the question itself is wrong. Hire for curiosity, communication clarity, and the ability to produce analysis that gets acted on, not just filed.
Ask for an example of a piece of analysis they produced that directly changed a business decision. Then probe: how did they frame the question, how did they validate that the right metric was being measured, and how did they present the finding? Analysts who produce reports nobody acts on are a cost, not an asset.
Give them a scenario and ask them to describe the SQL they'd write. Can they use window functions, CTEs, and subqueries without hesitation? SQL is the foundational tool — candidates who struggle here will bottleneck on most real-world tasks.
Ask how they validate data before producing analysis. Analysts who present findings without checking data quality first create false confidence in flawed conclusions. Probe for specific examples of data quality issues they've caught and how they communicated them.
Ask for an example of presenting data findings to a non-technical audience. How did they structure it, what did they leave out, and how did they handle questions they couldn't immediately answer? Communication skill is what makes analysis valuable.
Analysis examples are descriptive — no insight or recommendation
SQL proficiency limited to basic SELECT with no joins or aggregations
No data validation process — takes source data at face value
Cannot give an example of analysis that changed a business decision
Visualisations prioritise aesthetics over clarity
Methodology and assumptions undocumented — results not reproducible
A strong analyst with no prior industry experience will outperform a domain expert with weak analytical skills within three to six months. Business context can be taught; the ability to frame a question correctly, validate data, and communicate findings clearly cannot be easily retrofitted. Prioritise analytical rigour and communication skill — domain knowledge is a bonus, not a prerequisite.
"Tell me about a piece of analysis you produced that directly influenced a business decision. What was the question, what did you find, and what changed?"
Decision impact is the primary measure of analyst value — this tests real-world effectiveness.
"You're given a dataset with 15% missing values in a key column. How do you decide what to do with it?"
Data quality judgement under ambiguity reveals analytical rigour and transparency habits.
"How would you calculate 30-day rolling retention for a mobile app using a table of daily active user events?"
Applied SQL thinking on a common business metric — tests practical coding fluency.
"How do you present findings to an executive who disagrees with your conclusion?"
Holding an evidence-based position under pressure is a critical but often overlooked analyst skill.
Every model has trade-offs. Here's how they compare so you can choose the right fit for your team.
General options
Hire directly in your city. Full cultural alignment and in-office presence, but the talent pool is limited and salaries are high.
Engage on a task or sprint basis. Fast to start, but loyalty is low and availability is never guaranteed long-term.
Hand off a scoped project to an agency. Good for defined deliverables, but you pay a premium and own very little of the relationship.
Via Teamified
Get a dedicated, full-time data analysts — vetted, onboarded, and HR-managed by Teamified. Same output as a local hire, at a fraction of the cost.

The flexibility and cultural fit made a huge difference. It wasn't just about filling seats - it was about finding the right people.

Have a chat with Teamified. You will get a sense that it's much more of a relationship situation where they're really wanting to understand your business, as opposed to a more transactional experience, which is what we found talking with some other providers. The good thing is, there's a team behind you if you pick the right partner to help.

I encourage all founders to treat this no different than hiring a local resource. The best thing about Teamified? They find great talent, vet them, and give you the flexibility to be as involved as you want in the hiring process.

My favourite part would be the opportunity for growth. I've seen it in the short time that I've been here, and I'm looking forward to more.
