Hiring guide
Hiring a web developer isn't just about finding someone who knows HTML and CSS. The wrong hire can stall your product roadmap for months, and cost far more than the salary you were trying to save. Here's what the Teamified team actually checks before placing a web developer with any client.
A degree means little if their GitHub and live projects don't back it up. Ask for 2–3 live URLs and check page load speed, mobile responsiveness, and code organisation. A well-structured public repo tells you more than any certificate.
Knowing React doesn't mean they're a fit for a Vue.js or Next.js codebase. Confirm the exact frameworks, versions, and tooling they've shipped with. 'JavaScript experience' covers a huge range, make sure you're talking about the same thing.
Remote web developers write code alone but ship with teams. Ask how they handle code reviews, architectural disagreements, and tight deadlines. A developer who can communicate tradeoffs clearly is worth more than one who can't explain their own decisions.
Give them a small, real-world challenge related to your stack during the interview. It doesn't need to be complex, just something they haven't seen before. How they approach an unfamiliar problem reveals far more than a curated list of past projects.
Can't explain why they chose one approach over another, good developers know the tradeoffs they made
Portfolio is all static pages with no dynamic functionality, APIs, or real-world complexity
Vague about testing, if they've never written a unit or integration test, that's a production risk
No questions about your codebase, team, or product, curious developers always ask
Claims broad expertise across every framework and language, genuine specialists know what they don't know
Can't describe a time they were wrong in a technical decision or had to change course
For web development, yes and no. A developer with 2 years of experience who has shipped 5 real products often outperforms someone with 6 years in a single enterprise system. Focus on the complexity and variety of what they've actually built, not just the years on their CV.
That said, if you need someone to lead architecture decisions, review others' code, or own a complex SPA end-to-end, a genuine minimum of 4 years in production environments matters. For execution-heavy roles, building features to spec, maintaining existing codebases, strong juniors with the right attitude are often a better value than inflated mid-level hires.
"Walk me through how you'd diagnose and fix a slow-loading page."
Tests real-world performance thinking, covers image optimisation, JavaScript bundle size, server response time, lazy loading, and caching. Weak answers stay surface-level; strong answers triage systematically.
"Tell me about a bug you introduced in production. How did you find it, fix it, and what changed afterwards?"
Reveals accountability, debugging process, and whether they document and prevent recurrence. Anyone who claims they've never shipped a bug is either lying or hasn't shipped much.
"How do you decide when to build something from scratch versus using a library or third-party service?"
Shows how they think about scope, maintainability, and business context, not just what's technically interesting. Over-engineers and under-engineers both fail this in different ways.
"If you joined our team tomorrow, what would you want to understand in the first week before writing a single line of code?"
Strong developers think about context, stakeholders, architecture, and existing patterns before they start. Someone who says 'just show me the tickets' is a red flag for rework.
Hiring models
Every model has trade-offs. Here's how they compare so you can choose the right fit for your team.
General options
Hire directly in your city. Full cultural alignment and in-office presence, but the talent pool is limited and salaries are high.
Engage on a task or sprint basis. Fast to start, but loyalty is low and availability is never guaranteed long-term.
Hand off a scoped project to an agency. Good for defined deliverables, but you pay a premium and own very little of the relationship.
Via Teamified
Get a dedicated, full-time web developers: vetted, onboarded, and HR-managed by Teamified. Same output as a local hire, at a fraction of the cost.
On salary costs vs. hiring locally
We headhunt the talent that isn't actively looking. Deep network access, thorough vetting, and a curated shortlist, and you make the final call.
Industry average is 15%, so you keep the difference

The flexibility and cultural fit made a huge difference. It wasn't just about filling seats - it was about finding the right people.

Have a chat with Teamified. You will get a sense that it's much more of a relationship situation where they're really wanting to understand your business, as opposed to a more transactional experience, which is what we found talking with some other providers. The good thing is, there's a team behind you if you pick the right partner to help.
