BI Analysts turn raw data into decisions. The best ones don't just build dashboards — they understand the business questions behind the data request, challenge assumptions in how metrics are defined, and build reporting infrastructure that scales beyond their own tenure. Hire for analytical thinking first, tool proficiency second.
Ask for an example of a dashboard or report they built. The key probe: what business question was it answering, and how did they validate that the metric they built was actually measuring what stakeholders needed? Analysts who skip this step produce beautiful dashboards nobody acts on.
Can they build a proper dimensional model — facts, dimensions, slowly changing dimensions? Ask them to describe the data model behind a reporting layer they've built. Surface-level BI work produces spaghetti SQL; structural thinking produces reliable, reusable models.
BI analysts regularly present findings to non-technical stakeholders. Ask for an example of a time the data told a story that challenged a widely held assumption — how they framed it, and how it was received.
Ask how they've dealt with data quality issues in source systems — how they identified them, documented them, and communicated data limitations in their reporting. Analysts who ignore data quality create false confidence in flawed numbers.
Cannot write a SQL query with window functions or CTEs
Builds dashboards without first defining the business question
Unfamiliar with any data warehouse platform
No awareness of data quality issues in source systems
Metric definitions are inconsistent across reports
Has never presented data findings directly to a senior stakeholder
Candidates who have used dbt (data build tool) in production environments have almost always worked in organisations that treat data models as code — with version control, testing, and documentation as standard practice. This signal is more reliable than tool brand (Tableau vs. Power BI) as an indicator of analytical rigour and scalability mindset.
"Describe a dashboard you built that you're proud of. What business question was it answering, and how do you know it answered it well?"
Business alignment is the primary value driver — this tests whether they build for action or aesthetics.
"Write a SQL query to calculate 7-day rolling average revenue per customer from a transactions table."
Window functions are a core BI analyst skill — a direct technical test in the interview is worth five hypothetical questions.
"Tell me about a time you found a data quality issue that was affecting reporting. What did you do?"
Data quality handling reveals both technical diligence and stakeholder communication skill.
"How would you explain a significant drop in a key business metric to a CEO who doesn't trust the data?"
Trust-building with sceptical stakeholders is the hardest part of the BI role.
Every model has trade-offs. Here's how they compare so you can choose the right fit for your team.
General options
Hire directly in your city. Full cultural alignment and in-office presence, but the talent pool is limited and salaries are high.
Engage on a task or sprint basis. Fast to start, but loyalty is low and availability is never guaranteed long-term.
Hand off a scoped project to an agency. Good for defined deliverables, but you pay a premium and own very little of the relationship.

The flexibility and cultural fit made a huge difference. It wasn't just about filling seats - it was about finding the right people.

Have a chat with Teamified. You will get a sense that it's much more of a relationship situation where they're really wanting to understand your business, as opposed to a more transactional experience, which is what we found talking with some other providers. The good thing is, there's a team behind you if you pick the right partner to help.

I encourage all founders to treat this no different than hiring a local resource. The best thing about Teamified? They find great talent, vet them, and give you the flexibility to be as involved as you want in the hiring process.

My favourite part would be the opportunity for growth. I've seen it in the short time that I've been here, and I'm looking forward to more.
