Hiring guide
Claims Analysts sit at the intersection of policy interpretation, investigation, and financial decision-making. They protect the insurer from fraud and overpayment while fairly serving legitimate claimants, a balance that requires both analytical rigour and human judgement. Rushing this hire creates liability; getting it right creates operational efficiency that compounds across your entire claims portfolio.
Ask them to walk through how they'd assess coverage for a scenario relevant to your lines of business. The ability to read a policy, identify the applicable clause, and apply it consistently is the foundational skill, without it, everything downstream is flawed.
How do they assess a suspicious claim? Ask for a specific example where something didn't add up, what they investigated, and what the outcome was. The process they describe reveals both their fraud awareness and their commitment to fairness.
Claims have financial consequences from day one. Ask how they approach setting or reviewing reserves, and what factors they consider when a claim is likely to develop over time.
Claims handling is regulated. Ask about their familiarity with relevant codes of practice (e.g., Insurance Contracts Act, ICA Code of Practice) and how they ensure compliance in their decision-making.
Cannot explain how to read a policy exclusion and apply it to a specific claim
No examples of identifying and escalating a suspicious claim
Unfamiliar with reserve setting or financial exposure concepts
Compliance framework knowledge is superficial, cannot name relevant codes
Denial letters described as template-only with no independent reasoning
Communication with claimants described as purely transactional
Claims analysts who've worked your specific lines, property, liability, workers' comp, health, adapt to new systems quickly. The reverse is much harder: a system expert from a different line of business will struggle with the coverage and investigation nuances of your portfolio. Prioritise coverage knowledge and investigation experience over claims management system familiarity.
"Walk me through how you'd assess a property damage claim from first notification to resolution."
Tests end-to-end process knowledge and decision-making discipline.
"Describe a claim that raised fraud concerns for you. What were the indicators, and what did you do?"
Fraud detection relies on experience pattern-matching, specific examples reveal real-world instinct.
"How do you approach explaining a denial decision to a claimant who believes they have a valid claim?"
Communication under conflict is a daily reality in claims, this tests empathy and firmness in balance.
"How do you set an initial reserve on a complex claim with uncertain development?"
Reserving accuracy has direct P&L impact, this tests financial reasoning under uncertainty.
Hiring models
Every model has trade-offs. Here's how they compare so you can choose the right fit for your team.
General options
Hire directly in your city. Full cultural alignment and in-office presence, but the talent pool is limited and salaries are high.
Engage on a task or sprint basis. Fast to start, but loyalty is low and availability is never guaranteed long-term.
Hand off a scoped project to an agency. Good for defined deliverables, but you pay a premium and own very little of the relationship.
Via Teamified

The flexibility and cultural fit made a huge difference. It wasn't just about filling seats - it was about finding the right people.

Have a chat with Teamified. You will get a sense that it's much more of a relationship situation where they're really wanting to understand your business, as opposed to a more transactional experience, which is what we found talking with some other providers. The good thing is, there's a team behind you if you pick the right partner to help.
