A full-stack developer who claims React and .NET is easy to find. One who can actually own a feature end-to-end — from API design through to a polished React UI — is not. The gap between 'I know both' and 'I ship both well' is enormous. Here's how to tell the difference before you make an offer.
Ask them to walk through a recent feature they built from scratch — database schema through to the React component. Listen for how naturally they move between layers. Developers who are genuinely full-stack talk about trade-offs across the boundary; specialists pretending to be full-stack go vague when you cross into the other side.
The .NET side of a React+.NET stack lives or dies by the quality of its API contracts. Ask how they structure endpoints, handle versioning, and think about payload shape. A developer who designs APIs for the front end they're building — not just technically correct APIs — is worth hiring.
Redux, Zustand, Context API, React Query — each has a place, and the wrong choice creates years of technical debt. Ask them which they'd use for a specific scenario and why. Developers who have a principled view on state and can explain the trade-offs have built real-world apps; those who always reach for the same tool haven't.
Error handling, loading states, and network failure recovery are where full-stack apps fall apart. Ask how they surface API errors in the UI, how they handle partial failures, and whether they've ever had to change an API contract after the front end was built. The answers reveal architectural maturity.
Can describe React or .NET in detail but goes vague the moment you cross the stack boundary — that's a specialist, not a full-stack developer
Has never written a database migration or doesn't understand the impact of schema changes on running applications
Dismisses TypeScript or calls it 'optional overhead' — a signal they haven't worked on a codebase that scales
Can't explain how they'd handle a breaking API change without taking the front end down — no versioning instincts
No opinion on when NOT to add a new endpoint versus reusing an existing one — over-engineered APIs are a real cost
Portfolio is tutorial clones — real full-stack work involves business logic, auth, data relationships, and edge cases
More than almost any other role, yes. A junior who knows React and can write a .NET controller is not a full-stack developer — they're two half-stacks stitched together. Genuine full-stack skill comes from having owned features across the boundary repeatedly, made mistakes on both sides, and developed the judgment to know when each layer is the right place to solve a problem.
For a greenfield product or a startup moving fast, you need at least 3–4 years of genuine full-stack delivery. For a team that already has strong front-end or back-end specialists and wants someone to bridge them, a developer with 2 years of focused full-stack work in a similar stack can be the right call — as long as they're not being asked to be the sole architect.
"Walk me through how you'd architect a feature that lets users export their data as a CSV — from the React button click to the downloaded file."
Reveals whether they think end-to-end: async job queuing, streaming response vs. in-memory, loading state in React, error handling. Weak answers skip the middle.
"Tell me about a time an API contract you designed caused a problem for the front end. What happened and what did you change?"
Full-stack developers who've shipped real features have felt the pain of bad API design from both sides. This question filters for experience over theory.
"How do you decide what belongs in the database versus what gets computed at runtime?"
Touches database normalisation, query performance, and front-end data shape — all in one question. Experienced developers have strong opinions here; juniors often haven't thought about it.
"If a React component is re-rendering too often and slowing down the page, how do you diagnose and fix it?"
Tests practical React profiling knowledge — useMemo, useCallback, component splitting, selector patterns. Answers reveal whether they debug by instinct or by data.
Every model has trade-offs. Here's how they compare so you can choose the right fit for your team.
General options
Hire directly in your city. Full cultural alignment and in-office presence, but the talent pool is limited and salaries are high.
Engage on a task or sprint basis. Fast to start, but loyalty is low and availability is never guaranteed long-term.
Hand off a scoped project to an agency. Good for defined deliverables, but you pay a premium and own very little of the relationship.
Via Teamified
Get a dedicated, full-time full-stack developers (react+.net) — vetted, onboarded, and HR-managed by Teamified. Same output as a local hire, at a fraction of the cost.

The flexibility and cultural fit made a huge difference. It wasn't just about filling seats - it was about finding the right people.

Have a chat with Teamified. You will get a sense that it's much more of a relationship situation where they're really wanting to understand your business, as opposed to a more transactional experience, which is what we found talking with some other providers. The good thing is, there's a team behind you if you pick the right partner to help.
