Hiring guide
Freight Forwarders orchestrate the movement of goods across borders, coordinating carriers, customs brokers, warehouses, and clients in time-sensitive supply chains. A great freight forwarder prevents delays, anticipates problems, and keeps clients informed before they have to ask. A weak one creates costly exceptions that erode margins and client trust.
Ask which freight modes (air, sea FCL, sea LCL, road, multimodal) and trade lanes (Asia-Pacific, transpacific, Europe) they've handled. Experience on your specific lanes and modes shortens onboarding dramatically, the regulatory and carrier nuances are lane-specific.
A bill of lading, commercial invoice, or packing list error can delay clearance for days. Ask how they've managed documentation quality, what their checking process is, how they've caught errors before submission, and what the consequences were when something slipped through.
Freight never goes entirely to plan. Ask for a specific example of a shipment that went wrong, cargo held at port, incorrect HS code flagged, carrier rollover, and how they managed the client communication and resolution simultaneously.
Freight forwarders rely on carrier relationships to secure space, priority treatment, and competitive rates. Ask how they've developed and maintained carrier relationships and for examples of situations where those relationships created advantage for a client.
Documentation checking process is informal, errors found at lodgement
Mode experience is narrow, sea only, with no air freight exposure
Cannot explain Incoterms relevant to common trade scenarios
Carrier relationships are transactional, no depth or preferred status
Exception management is reactive, clients find out from carriers before the forwarder
No experience with CargoWise or a comparable freight management system
CargoWise is the dominant freight management platform in the Australian market. Candidates who've operated CargoWise at a transactional level, creating shipments, managing milestones, generating documents, and running reports, can be productive within days in a new environment. If you're choosing between two otherwise equal candidates, CargoWise depth should tip the decision.
"Tell me about a shipment that went wrong. What happened, how did you manage the client, and how was it resolved?"
Exception handling is the real test of a freight forwarder, smooth shipments don't reveal skill.
"Walk me through how you'd handle an FCL booking from client enquiry to vessel departure."
End-to-end process knowledge reveals operational depth across the full freight cycle.
"How do you advise a client on Incoterms when they're not sure which term to use for a new trade lane?"
Incoterms advisory is a real client value-add, this tests applied commercial knowledge.
"How have you managed a situation where a carrier has rolled your client's cargo to the next vessel?"
Carrier rollover is a common disruption, client communication and recovery management are both tested.
Hiring models
Every model has trade-offs. Here's how they compare so you can choose the right fit for your team.
General options
Hire directly in your city. Full cultural alignment and in-office presence, but the talent pool is limited and salaries are high.
Engage on a task or sprint basis. Fast to start, but loyalty is low and availability is never guaranteed long-term.
Hand off a scoped project to an agency. Good for defined deliverables, but you pay a premium and own very little of the relationship.
Via Teamified
Get a dedicated, full-time freight forwarders: vetted, onboarded, and HR-managed by Teamified. Same output as a local hire, at a fraction of the cost.
On salary costs vs. hiring locally
We headhunt the talent that isn't actively looking. Deep network access, thorough vetting, and a curated shortlist, and you make the final call.
Industry average is 15%, so you keep the difference
Hand us the brief and we run the whole process: sourcing, screening, interviews, and offer management. Your team stays focused on the business.

Trusted by companies worldwide.
The flexibility and cultural fit made a huge difference. It wasn't just about filling seats - it was about finding the right people.

Have a chat with Teamified. You will get a sense that it's much more of a relationship situation where they're really wanting to understand your business, as opposed to a more transactional experience, which is what we found talking with some other providers. The good thing is, there's a team behind you if you pick the right partner to help.

I encourage all founders to treat this no different than hiring a local resource. The best thing about Teamified? They find great talent, vet them, and give you the flexibility to be as involved as you want in the hiring process.
