Hiring guide
Customs Compliance Officers sit at the intersection of international trade, regulation, and operational logistics. Their accuracy directly affects import costs, border clearance times, and exposure to penalties or seizure. In a high-volume import/export environment, a single misclassification can trigger audits that cost far more than the compliance investment.
Ask them to walk through how they'd classify a new product category they haven't encountered before, what resources they'd consult, how they'd apply the General Rules of Interpretation, and how they'd document the classification decision. Classification accuracy is the foundational skill.
Free trade agreements create significant duty savings, but only if origin rules are correctly applied. Ask for specific FTAs they've worked with (AUSFTA, CPTPP, RCEP) and examples of preferential duty claims they've managed.
Ask whether they've dealt directly with the ABF or equivalent border authority, in routine correspondence, tariff advice requests, or compliance reviews. A clean compliance record and productive agency relationships are strong signals.
Errors in customs entries, packing lists, or commercial invoices cause delays and penalties. Ask how they've managed documentation quality across high-volume shipment flows and what their error rate has been.
Cannot explain the General Rules of Interpretation for tariff classification
FTA knowledge limited to awareness, no hands-on preferential claims experience
No direct ABF or border agency engagement experience
Documentation errors treated as someone else's responsibility to catch
Unfamiliar with customs valuation methods beyond transaction value
Has never managed or responded to a compliance audit
Candidates with full customs broker licences bring deep regulatory knowledge but are accustomed to operating with broad scope and independent authority. If the role is compliance-focused rather than full brokerage, set expectations clearly about scope at the interview stage, a licensed broker hired into a pure compliance role without agency autonomy can become frustrated quickly.
"Walk me through how you'd classify a composite product you've never seen before using the HS tariff schedule."
Classification methodology is the core technical skill, this tests applied process, not memorisation.
"Describe a situation where you identified a classification or valuation error in an existing import programme. What did you do?"
Proactive compliance error detection prevents penalties, reactive detection does not.
"How have you used a free trade agreement to reduce duty costs for your employer or client? Walk me through the process."
FTA utilisation is a direct cost-saving skill, this tests practical application, not just awareness.
"How do you stay current with changes to tariff schedules, trade agreements, and ABF requirements?"
Trade compliance is in constant flux, passive knowledge becomes a liability quickly.
Hiring models
Every model has trade-offs. Here's how they compare so you can choose the right fit for your team.
General options
Hire directly in your city. Full cultural alignment and in-office presence, but the talent pool is limited and salaries are high.
Engage on a task or sprint basis. Fast to start, but loyalty is low and availability is never guaranteed long-term.
Hand off a scoped project to an agency. Good for defined deliverables, but you pay a premium and own very little of the relationship.
Via Teamified

The flexibility and cultural fit made a huge difference. It wasn't just about filling seats - it was about finding the right people.

Have a chat with Teamified. You will get a sense that it's much more of a relationship situation where they're really wanting to understand your business, as opposed to a more transactional experience, which is what we found talking with some other providers. The good thing is, there's a team behind you if you pick the right partner to help.
