Hiring guide
Audio Designers shape how a product sounds, from UI sound effects and notification tones to full game soundscapes and podcast production. It's a specialised creative discipline that intersects deeply with technical delivery formats. Hiring the wrong person produces either undeliverable assets or technically correct but creatively flat audio.
Ask to hear examples from both interactive work (games, apps, UI) and linear work (video, film, podcast). The skills overlap but the mindset differs significantly, interactive audio is procedural, linear is compositional.
Audio assets for games, apps, and video each have specific format, sample rate, bit depth, and loop requirements. Ask how they prepare and deliver assets for different platforms, and whether they've worked with audio middleware like FMOD or Wwise.
Audio designers rarely work alone. Ask for examples of how they've synced work with video editors, game designers, or UX teams, and how they've handled direction that conflicted with their own creative instincts.
Audio rounds can be slow if the designer requires lengthy rework cycles. Ask about their typical revision process, how many rounds are standard, how they handle real-time direction sessions, and whether they can work in sessions with clients or directors.
Portfolio is all one type of audio, no range across formats
Unfamiliar with technical delivery specifications (sample rates, bit depth, loop points)
Has never worked in a client-directed revision process
Cannot describe how they'd create adaptive audio for an interactive context
Disorganised file management, cannot quickly locate source files
No experience collaborating with visual or UX teams
Audio designers with game audio backgrounds are well-prepared for app and product work, they understand asset management at scale, interactive triggering logic, and the importance of consistent sound palettes. If you're hiring for a product or app context and can't find a specialist, a game audio candidate with strong UI portfolio pieces is often the better hire over a music producer making their first foray into product audio.
"Walk me through how you'd approach designing the audio for a mobile app UI, from initial brief to final delivery."
Tests end-to-end process and technical delivery awareness for a common real-world brief.
"Describe a project where the creative direction changed significantly mid-way. How did you adapt?"
Flexibility under changing direction is critical in client-facing audio work.
"How do you design audio that feels cohesive when players or users trigger multiple sounds simultaneously?"
Audio layer management is a core interactive audio skill, this tests applied thinking.
"What's your process for delivering a final audio package, formats, naming, documentation?"
Delivery discipline determines how easily assets integrate into a production pipeline.
Hiring models
Every model has trade-offs. Here's how they compare so you can choose the right fit for your team.
General options
Hire directly in your city. Full cultural alignment and in-office presence, but the talent pool is limited and salaries are high.
Engage on a task or sprint basis. Fast to start, but loyalty is low and availability is never guaranteed long-term.
Hand off a scoped project to an agency. Good for defined deliverables, but you pay a premium and own very little of the relationship.
Via Teamified
Get a dedicated, full-time audio designers: vetted, onboarded, and HR-managed by Teamified. Same output as a local hire, at a fraction of the cost.

The flexibility and cultural fit made a huge difference. It wasn't just about filling seats - it was about finding the right people.

Have a chat with Teamified. You will get a sense that it's much more of a relationship situation where they're really wanting to understand your business, as opposed to a more transactional experience, which is what we found talking with some other providers. The good thing is, there's a team behind you if you pick the right partner to help.

I encourage all founders to treat this no different than hiring a local resource. The best thing about Teamified? They find great talent, vet them, and give you the flexibility to be as involved as you want in the hiring process.
