Firmware Developers write the software that lives closest to the hardware, the code that makes microcontrollers, embedded systems, and IoT devices actually function. Bugs at this level can brick hardware, create safety hazards, or cause field recalls that cost orders of magnitude more than the development did. Hire for discipline, debugging tenacity, and deep understanding of the hardware-software boundary.
Ask which microcontroller families they've worked with, ARM Cortex-M, AVR, PIC, ESP32, RISC-V, and at what level. Candidates who've written bare-metal drivers and understood datasheet-level peripheral configuration are in a different category from those who've only used Arduino abstractions.
Ask which RTOSes they've used (FreeRTOS, Zephyr, ThreadX) and how they've handled scheduling, task priority, and inter-task communication. RTOS misuse is one of the most common sources of intermittent firmware bugs, probe for depth.
Firmware debugging without a debugger attached is a genuine skill. Ask how they've used JTAG, SWD, logic analysers, and oscilloscopes to diagnose timing issues, peripheral failures, or memory corruption. Candidates who rely only on serial print debugging will struggle with complex hardware issues.
For medical, automotive, or industrial firmware, functional safety standards (IEC 62443, IEC 60601, MISRA C) are mandatory. Ask for specific experience with standards-compliant development, code review processes, and static analysis tooling.

They've studied circuit theory, microelectronics, and signal processing, which gives them genuine instinct for hardware-software interactions. For IoT and embedded roles, this background is often more valuable than a pure software engineering pedigree.

Debugging methodology at the hardware-software boundary is the defining skill of a strong firmware engineer.

Bare-metal peripheral configuration from a datasheet is the core embedded skill, this tests real depth.
"How do you manage shared resources between two FreeRTOS tasks safely?"
