Cybersecurity Engineers protect infrastructure, detect threats, and respond to incidents — often simultaneously. The field moves fast: threat actors adapt, frameworks evolve, and yesterday's secure configuration is today's known vulnerability. Hire for hands-on technical depth, continuous learning habits, and the rare ability to communicate risk to both engineers and executives.
Many candidates can discuss NIST, ISO 27001, and Zero Trust in the abstract. Ask what they've actually built or operated — SIEM configurations, detection rules, firewall policy sets, incident response playbooks. Implementation experience separates practitioners from theorists.
Ask for a specific security incident they were involved in responding to — not a hypothetical. What triggered the alert, what their role was, what they found, and how it was contained. The pressure and specificity of real incidents is where security skill is proven.
Ask what they're currently reading or monitoring to stay current — threat intelligence feeds, CVE tracking, security research. Candidates who've stopped learning become liabilities within 12–18 months in this field.
On-premises security knowledge doesn't automatically transfer to cloud environments. Ask specifically about cloud security controls they've configured — IAM policies, security groups, GuardDuty/Defender for Cloud, logging pipelines — in production environments.
Security knowledge is entirely framework and certification-based with no hands-on tool experience
Cannot describe a real incident they've responded to
Cloud security experience is theoretical — no production configuration
Not actively tracking current threats or CVEs
Cannot explain how they'd detect a lateral movement attempt in a network
No experience writing or tuning detection rules in a SIEM
Candidates who actively compete in Capture the Flag events or maintain home lab environments demonstrate the continuous self-directed learning that security roles demand. These signals often predict performance better than certifications alone. When reviewing junior security candidates, ask what they've built or broken in their own time — the answer reveals both technical curiosity and the self-motivation that the field requires.
"Describe a security incident you responded to. What triggered it, what did you find, and how was it resolved?"
Real incident experience is the most reliable predictor of response effectiveness under pressure.
"Walk me through how you'd build a detection rule for a common attack technique — say, credential stuffing against a web application."
Detection engineering is a core daily skill — this tests applied technical thinking.
"How do you prioritise a vulnerability management backlog when you have 200 findings and limited remediation resources?"
Risk-based prioritisation is the practical reality of security operations — not every CVE can be patched.
"How would you explain to a CEO why a finding rated 'medium' severity requires immediate action?"
Executive communication of technical risk is a critical but often underdeveloped security skill.
Every model has trade-offs. Here's how they compare so you can choose the right fit for your team.
General options
Hire directly in your city. Full cultural alignment and in-office presence, but the talent pool is limited and salaries are high.
Engage on a task or sprint basis. Fast to start, but loyalty is low and availability is never guaranteed long-term.
Hand off a scoped project to an agency. Good for defined deliverables, but you pay a premium and own very little of the relationship.
Via Teamified
Get a dedicated, full-time cybersecurity engineers — vetted, onboarded, and HR-managed by Teamified. Same output as a local hire, at a fraction of the cost.

The flexibility and cultural fit made a huge difference. It wasn't just about filling seats - it was about finding the right people.

Have a chat with Teamified. You will get a sense that it's much more of a relationship situation where they're really wanting to understand your business, as opposed to a more transactional experience, which is what we found talking with some other providers. The good thing is, there's a team behind you if you pick the right partner to help.

I encourage all founders to treat this no different than hiring a local resource. The best thing about Teamified? They find great talent, vet them, and give you the flexibility to be as involved as you want in the hiring process.

My favourite part would be the opportunity for growth. I've seen it in the short time that I've been here, and I'm looking forward to more.
