Hiring guide
Content writers are one of the most hired and most mis-hired roles in any marketing team. The ability to write grammatically correct sentences is table stakes, the real skill is understanding an audience, researching a topic thoroughly, structuring ideas for scanability, and writing in a way that achieves a specific goal. Here's how to find one who can actually move the needle.
Ask them to walk you through how they'd research a topic they know nothing about. Strong content writers have a process: primary sources, subject matter expert interviews, competitor content gap analysis, and fact-checking. Writers who rely solely on existing blog posts produce derivative content that adds no new value, and Google notices.
Give them a sample of your existing content and ask them to describe the brand voice in their own words, then ask them to write three sentences in that voice on a new topic. Writers who can absorb and reproduce a brand voice without extensive back-and-forth are dramatically more productive than those who write in a fixed personal style.
The best content writers understand search intent, know how to use a keyword naturally, and structure content for featured snippets, but they write for humans first. Ask how they approach a content brief that includes a keyword. Writers who stuff keywords or chase word counts over clarity produce content that performs poorly for both readers and search engines.
Test this with a sample task: give them a brief on a moderately technical topic in your industry with limited briefing material. The ability to synthesise information from varied sources, translate complexity into clarity, and take a clear editorial position is what separates B-grade content mills from writers who build real brand authority.
Portfolio is generic, lifestyle blogs, product descriptions, and AI-assisted fluff with no clear evidence of research or editorial voice
Can't explain the difference between informational, navigational, and transactional search intent, they don't understand the purpose of the content they're creating
Every piece sounds the same regardless of brand, they're writing for themselves, not for the client
Defensive about editing or feedback, good writers know their first draft is a starting point, not a finished product
Has never interviewed a subject matter expert or verified a claim from a primary source, content without substance is a liability
Overpromises on turnaround, fast content is rarely good content; the best writers are honest about what research requires
For most content work, a great writer in a different industry will outperform a mediocre writer in your industry. Strong writers adapt quickly, they interview your subject matter experts, study your competitors, and immerse themselves in the topic. Experience in your exact vertical matters most when the writing requires deep technical accuracy (medical, legal, financial) or where regulatory requirements demand precision.
For those verticals, look for writers with credentials or demonstrated experience in that specific domain, not just someone who can research well. For everything else, prioritise quality of writing, research discipline, and brand voice adaptability over industry match.
"Give me an example of a piece of content you wrote that performed better than expected. What do you think made the difference?"
Reveals whether they understand what drives content performance, distribution, search intent match, format, depth, backlinks. Writers who attribute success purely to their writing skill haven't thought carefully enough about the full picture.
"How do you approach writing about a topic you're not an expert in?"
Tests their research process, intellectual humility, and ability to translate expertise they don't have. The best content writers are professional learners, they synthesise others' knowledge and make it accessible.
"Show me a piece you've written that you're least happy with. What would you change?"
Reveals self-awareness and editorial judgment. Writers who can critique their own work dispassionately are usually better at taking direction and improving with feedback.
"If a piece of long-form content you wrote isn't ranking after three months, what's your diagnosis process?"
Shows whether they understand the relationship between content and SEO, intent mismatch, thin coverage, poor internal linking, or competitive SERP difficulty. Writers who say 'I just write, SEO is someone else's job' can't own the outcome.

Have a chat with Teamified. You will get a sense that it's much more of a relationship situation where they're really wanting to understand your business, as opposed to a more transactional experience, which is what we found talking with some other providers. The good thing is, there's a team behind you if you pick the right partner to help.
